Our Radiographers and Radiologists have advanced training in their respective fields of interest.
We have high-end imaging equipment available for dedicated studies including 64 and 256 slice CT scanners, as well as 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla MRI scanners with specialized coils.
Useful information for referring practitioners:
REQUEST FORMS: A request form completed by a registered health care professional is deemed a requirement for imaging by the RSSA. Contact us for further information.
Previous examinations should be brought along for comparison.
Medical Aid card and ID document should be brought along by the patient.
MEDICAL AID AUTHORISATION:
Outpatients: Can obtain authorisation by contacting their Medical Aid. Contact us if assistance is required.
In-hospital patient authorisation: Usually arranged by our department.
PREPARATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS:
Examinations require that the patient should be fasted will include:
- GIT Studies: Barium swallow or barium meal.
- Ultrasound of the upper abdomen
- MRI of the abdomen including MRCP studies
Barium enema, Cardiac CT, CT colonoscopy, MR abdomen, MR pelvic region – please contact the department.
We do our utmost to adhere to appointment times, but unplanned emergency cases can, unfortunately, cause delays.
Our practices adhere to current radiation protocols.
COST OF EXAMINATIONS:
Quotes can be provided via email, per request. Only written quotes are official.
Weight limits for CT or MR scans: If patient > 150 kg, kindly contact the department.
The Interventional department functions separately from our main imaging department.

Important information we require:
There is an extensive checklist of previous procedures and implants as well as devices we need to know of, including:
- Cardiac pacemakers or residual electrodes
- Cardiac valve prosthesis
- Metallic foreign objects, especially in the eyes
- Neurostimulator devices
- Cochlear implants
- Certain cerebral artery aneurysm clips
- Certain cardiac stents
- Hearing aids
This will be checked by our staff as well.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO OBTAIN FROM THE PATIENT, PRIOR TO ATTENDANCE (IF POSSIBLE):
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Iodine allergy
- Renal failure
- Thyroid disease: Thyrotoxicosis
- Asthma history
- Any other allergies
- Known or suspected pheochromocytoma
- Diabetes Mellitus and use of Metformin
- Use of blood-thinning agents. May need discontinuation depending on planned examination or procedure.

Dr WJ Burger
Dr Wim Burger joined Burger Radiologists in 2002 after graduating from UOFS. He is a General Radiologist with special interest in GIT Radiology and MSK imaging.
Dr PJ Fourie
Dr Philip Fourie completed MBChB in 1985 and qualified as diagnostic Radiologist in 1990. He joined Burger Radiologists during 1991 and has been with the practice ever since and has an interest in General Radiology and Practice Management.
Dr DJ Thom
David joined Burger Radiologists in 2004. He has a special interest in MRI imaging, neuroimaging, head and neck imaging and musculoskeletal imaging.
He enjoys teaching and has been a part time lecturer at Steve Biko Academic Hospital for many years.

Dr Gert Steyn qualified as Diagnostic Radiologist in 2006. He joined Burger Radiologists in 2007. A keen General Radiologist, with a special interest in Breast Imaging.
Dr WJN Vermeulen
FC Rad D(SA)
Dr Wessel Vermeulen qualified as Diagnostic Radiologist at University of Pretoria during 2008. He joined Burger Radiologists during 2009. Completed the European Diploma in Neuroradiology(EDiNR) during 2018. He has a special interest in Neuroradiology, and also Musculoskeletal MRI and Prostate MRI.
Dr FJS Steyn
Dr Stefan Steyn qualified as Diagnostic Radiologist during 2008. He joined Burger Radiologists in 2009. He is a General Radiologist, with special interest and expertise in Interventional Radiology. He completed the PLANET neuro intervention course and is an accredited Neurointerventionist registered with SANIS. He also has an interest in Musculoskeletal imaging.
Dr F Potgieter
Dr Francois Potgieter ia an accredited Neurointerventionist registered with SANIS. He completed his Radiology training in 2007 and obtained a postgraduate Diploma in General Interventional Radiology during 2008 at UOFS. He also completed the PLANET neuro intervention course. He joined Burger Radiologists during 2010 as an Interventional Radiologist. He also enjoys the challenges of General Radiology.
Dr M Bove
Dr Michele Bove is a General Radiologist with a keen interest in the areas of Head and Neck Imaging as well as Body Imaging. After obtaining his postgraduate quantification training at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Mickey subsequently joined the practice in early 2017. He enjoys cutting edge technology, and helping clinicians and patients.
Dr N Bellew
Dr Neil Bellew joined Burger Radiologists in 2011. He has an interest in the field of Musculoskeletal Imaging. He also partakes in the management of administrative matters in the practice. Neil completed a South African Musculoskeletal Imaging fellowship the year after qualifying.
Dr W Steyn
Dr Werner Steyn joined Burger Radiologists in 2013. He subsequently completed a Neuroradiology diploma (EDiNR) in 2016 through the European college of Neuroradiology. He also has an interest in Musculoskeletal imaging.
Dr MJ Wilson
Dr Mike Wilson qualified as Radiologist in 1991. He joined the practice in 1993 and enjoys General Radiology. Has a special interest in the uses of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology.
Dr TD de Beer
Dr Toby De Beer joined the practice in 1991 after qualifying as Diagnostic Radiologist in 1989. He is a General Radiologist with years of experience, with a special interest in Practice Management.
Dr A Celliers
Dr Arno Cilliers qualified as Radiologist in 2016. He joined the practice in 2017 and has a special interest in Urogenital and Abdominal imaging. He completed a MRI Prostate mini fellowship with the ACR during 2019.
Dr AE Coetzé
Dr Annelize Coetzé joined the Burger Radiology Practice during 2002. She enjoys hepatobiliary and abdominal imaging which are her special interests. She has a high level of expertise in the imaging of hepatic conditions.
Dr E Schmid
Dr Eric Schmid qualified as a Diagnostic Radiologist in 1994. He remained part of the University staff for a number of years as an honorary part time lecturer in Radiology. Eric joined Burger Radiologists in 1995 after a 6 month Consultant post at Helen Joseph Hospital. He did a UCSF Neuromuscular mini Fellowship in San Francisco and has an interest in Neuroimaging and Body Intervention. He enjoys teaching prospective Radiologists and Radiographers.
Dr H Hanekom
MMed Rad D (Wits)
Dr Heleen Hanekom qualified as a Diagnostic Radiologist during 2017. She joined the practice during 2018 and has a very keen interest in Breast Imaging
Dr JM Edwards
Dr Jennifer Edwards is an experienced General Radiologist. She joined Burger Radiology in 2006. She enjoys all aspects of Radiology but has a particular interest in Cross Sectional imaging and Paediatric imaging.
Dr J Badenhorst

Dr Jacques Badenhorst finished his medical degree in 2012 at the University of Pretoria.
He completed his radiology training in 2022, obtaining his MMed (Rad D) and FCR (Diag Rad) in 2022.
He has keen interests in cardiovascular, thoracic and neuro imaging.
